COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course will cover methodological issues from research design through to publication and will provide delegates with the advanced knowledge and skills they require to successfully undertake rigorous qualitative research in whichever setting they choose. A range of methods (e.g. interviews, focus groups. and textual data) and methodologies (e.g. Thematic Framework Analysis, Thematic Analysis, and Grounded Theory) will be taught in an advanced, but accessible way. The course tutors will combine theory, with practical examples from real datasets in order to offer students hands on experience with data analysis and the principles which underpin the different types of analyses.

HOW IS COURSE TAUGHT?
The course will be delivered face to face through lectures and workshops.

WHAT WILL I GET OUT OF IT?
By the end of the course you will:
  • Confidently select the most appropriate data collection methods (e.g. interviewing, focus groups, and textual data) and data-cleaning techniques (e.g. transcription and QDA software management) and competently execute them in future qualitative and mixed-methods studies.
  • Appreciate ethical issues surrounding the use of qualitative methods in cross-disciplinary health research and engage with concepts of researcher positionality.
  • Understand the theoretical and applied nature of different qualitative methodologies, including Grounded Theory, Thematic Analysis, and Thematic Framework Analysis. Assuredly manage and work with qualitative datasets.
  • Critically appraise qualitative research using different methodologies and have a comprehensive understanding of rigour in cross-disciplinary health research studies.
  • Approach and analyse qualitative datasets in a rigorous, ethical, and knowledgeable way when undertaking future qualitative research.

Participants will be awarded a certificate of attendance.

WHO IS IT FOR?
Anyone undertaking qualitative health research as part of a Masters, PhD, post-doctoral fellowship, or as part of their job (academic or otherwise). The work they should be involved in should have a focus on clinical, emotional, mental, physical, or psychological health, but can be from any discipline.
