LAHP - Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Studentships - Doctoral awards

Eligibility criteria

  • Open to residents of the following countries
    European Union, United Kingdom
  • Candidates should hold a first-class or a good upper-second class Honours degree or equivalent, and would normally be expected to hold a Masters degree.
  • Funding is available to support study for a postgraduate degree at MPhil/PhD programme level only.
  • Funding is only available to support research that falls within the subject areas covered by the AHRC.
  • Funding is normally only available to applicants liable to pay UK/EU fees. Your fee status - UK/EU/Overseas - is assessed by the relevant institutional admissions teams, and will be shown in your admissions record/offer letter.
  • LAHP studentships are open to UK and EU students who meet the residency requirements as detailed on page 16 of the cross-Research Council Terms and Conditions of Training Grants.. Please note: EU students are eligible to apply for LAHP funding on exactly the same basis as UK students. LAHP expects to make full awards (fees and maintenance) to successful EU candidates in 2018. In exceptional circumstances an EU award may be made to a successful candidate on a fees-only basis.
  • To be eligible for LAHP studentship in the forthcoming recruitment round you must either: -have submitted an application to commence a programme of postgraduate study in the 2018/19 academic year, which starts in September/October 2018, or -if you have already commenced doctoral study, you may apply for funding for the remainder of your study, providing that, at the start of the AHRC award (1st October 2018), you will have at least 50% of the period of study remaining (excluding the writing-up period). Awards cannot be deferred and selected candidates will be assumed to be starting their studies in September/October 2018 unless there are exceptional circumstances.

Information about the funding

The London Arts and Humanities Partnership has up to 80 cross-institutional studentships per year available for postgraduate research students studying arts and humanities disciplines at King’s College London, School of Advanced Study or University College London. Your research topic must be within the subject areas covered by the AHRC.

Subject to availability, these awards will cover:

  • Tuition fees for a maximum of three years at the Home/EU rate
  • Annual maintenance grant or allowance (stipend), £16,553 for 2017/18
  • LAHP has a limited number of full awards (fees and stipend) for EU students designated `fees-only’ by the AHRC

Studentship Competition Timeline

  • 27th November 2017-
    Applications open via our online application portal
  • 10th January 2018- Recommended date by which to submit an application for PhD study at LAHP partner institutions
  • 21st January 2018 at 23:59– Applications deadline. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
  • 29th January 2018 at 09:00– Deadline for Supervisor Statement of Support
  • Mid-March 2018 – Students must be in receipt of an offer on their chosen PhD programme
  • End March 2018– Offers to successful candidates
  • Within two weeks of the offer of award– students to accept/decline the offer
  • 1 October 2018– Studentships to begin

Application procedure

Before applying for a LAHP studentship you must have applied to commence a programme of postgraduate study in the 2018/19 academic year at one of the LAHP partner institutions. You are advised to apply for your place of study well in advance of the application deadline for LAHP studentships to ensure that you have the opportunity to consult with your proposed supervisor in preparing the LAHP studentship application. LAHP strongly recommends that you apply for your place of study before 10th January 2018..

Students wishing to apply for MPhil/PhD programmes at King’s College London MUST apply using our online admissions application portal (https://myapplication.kcl.ac.uk/).

PLEASE NOTE: students who have already applied for admissions to King's, and those who previously applied but deferred entry to 2018-19, and those who have already commenced their MPhil/PhD research degree programme, will NOT be required to submit an admissions application to King's again. Students will however have to complete an online LAHP studentship application by the application deadline of 23:59 (GMT) on 21st January 2018.
